Samar Ranjan Sen (c. 1915 – 28 July 2004) was an Indian agricultural economist who served at theInternational Bank for Reconstruction and Development as its executive director. He belonged to theIndian Economic Service of 1938 batch.[1]
Born into an Indian BengaliBaidya Brahmin family. Sen obtained his PhD from theLondon School of Economics in 1946 and later taught atDacca University beforepartition.[2]
The first member of the Indian Economic Service in 1938, Sen joined theMinistry of Agriculture in 1948 and served as advisor of thePlanning Commission prior to his appointment at theWorld Bank.[2]
After returning to India, he became a part ofReserve Bank of India's green revolution east (1985) and later became a member of theSarkaria Commission.[2] He also established research centers of agriculture in the country.[3]
