Saleem Asmi

Saleem Asmi (1934–2020) was a Pakistanijournalist who served as an editor ofDawn andKhaleej Times.[1]

Biography

Asmi was born on 29 November 1934 inJhansi, India.[2] He attended and graduated from the University of Karachi with masters in English literature.[2] After graduation, he joinedPakistan Times as a sub-editor.[2] During the regime ofMuhammad Zia-ul-Haq, he was imprisoned for criticising the government.[2]

In 1988, he joinedDawn as a city editor.[2] In March 2000, Asmi became the editor ofDawn, after the retirement of its veteran editorAhmad Ali Khan.[2] During his tenure as an editor ofDawn, he introduced two magazines,The Gallery andBooks and Authors.[1] He served as an editor until 2003 when he was removed from the position.[2]

Saleem Asmi died in 2020 at the age of 85.[3]
