TheSakonnet River is atidal strait in the state ofRhode Island which flows approximately 14 miles (23 km) betweenMount Hope Bay andRhode Island Sound. It separatesAquidneck Island from the eastern portion ofNewport County.[1]
"Sakonnet" is derived from theSakonnet people, related to theWampanoag people who spoke a dialect of theMassachusett language, that inhabited the surrounding area. The name has been interpreted in a variety of ways including "where the water pours forth".[2]
