TheSaint Kitts and Nevis national football team is the national team ofSaint Kitts and Nevis, and is controlled by theSt. Kitts and Nevis Football Association. They are affiliated to theCaribbean Football Union ofCONCACAF. The team has never qualified for theFIFA World Cup, however, they did qualify for their firstCONCACAF Gold Cup appearance in 2023.
They are nicknamedThe Sugar Boyz due to the sugar cultivation on the island of St. Kitts.[3]
Saint Kitts and Nevis played their first match on 18 August 1938, againstGrenada, a match that ended in a 2–4 defeat.[4] They participated in theLeeward Islands Tournament from 1949 however had to wait until 1979 to play their first official matches, in the qualifying rounds for the1979 CFU Championship, losing twice toJamaica, both results finishing 2–1.[5] They would again fail to qualify for the final phase of the1983 CFU Championship after advancing due toJamaica's withdrawal, eliminated byMartinique, who won 12–0 on aggregate.[6]
TheSugar Boyz qualified for their first tournament at the1993 Caribbean Cup, drawing againstDominican Republic (2–2) andBritish Virgin Islands (5–1) to top their qualifying group.[7] In the tournament proper, they finished second behindJamaica to reach the semi-finals, before losing toMartinique on penalties.[7] In the match for third place, they were defeated 3–2 byTrinidad and Tobago.[7] Saint Kitts and Nevis finished bottom of their group in1996[8] but in the1997 Caribbean Cup, they advanced into the knock-out after finishing level on points with bothTrinidad and Tobago andMartinique, then defeatedGrenada 2–1 in extra-time[9] with both goals scored byKeith Gumbs,[10] but they succumbed toTrinidad and Tobago 0–4 in the final.[11] Since they'd reached the final, Saint Kitts and Nevis were entered into a play-off againstCuba – runner-up in the1996 Caribbean Cup – for the last ticket to the1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup, but they lost 2–0.[9]
Saint Kitts and Nevis participated for the first time in the1998 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.[12] After benefiting from the withdrawal of theBahamas, they beatSaint Lucia 5–1 inBasseterre and 1–0 inCastries,[13] but fell in the third knockout round againstSaint Vincent and the Grenadines, losing thanks to theaway goals rule.[14]
In the2002 World Cup qualifiers, after comfortably beating theTurks and Caicos Islands with an aggregate result of 14–0,Saint Vincent and the Grenadines once again dispatched theSugar Boyz, winning both inKingstown (1–0) as inBasseterre (1–2).[12] However, the situation would improve in the2006 qualifiers, since Saint Kitts and Nevis advanced to the second group phase after leaving theUS Virgin Islands andBarbados on the way.[15] They shared Group 3 withMexico,Trinidad and Tobago andSaint Vincent and the Grenadines, but as expected, finished in last place, with 6 losses in as many appearances.[16] They also experienced the worst defeat in their history, 8–0 againstMexico.[17] In the preliminary round for the2010 qualifiers, they were unable to repeat what they had done four years ago and were unceremoniously eliminated byBelize, who won 4–2 on aggregate.[18]
In the Caribbean Cup, theSugar Boyz did not repeat the successes of the '90s and could only qualify to the final phase of the2001 Caribbean Cup, although they did not advance beyond the group phase.[19] They have not returned to a final phase since that edition.[20]

Qualifying directly to the second round of the2014 qualifiers, Saint Kitts and Nevis was drawn in Group D along withCanada,Puerto Rico andSaint Lucia.[21] They finished in 3rd place, with 7 points.[22] It was only defeated byCanada in Toronto (4–0).[23] In the2018 World Cup qualifiers, Saint Kitts and Nevis defeated theTurks and Caicos Islands in the first round by a lofty aggregate 12–4[24] before falling in the second phase, at the hands ofEl Salvador, 6–3 on aggregate, but not before obtaining a 2–2 draw at home.[25] In November 2015, they played 2 friendlies against European teams,Andorra (1–0) andEstonia (0–3).[26]Devaughn Elliott scored the only goal in the victory over Andorra, becoming the first St. Kitts and Nevis player to score against a European side.[27] The result was also the first away victory for aCFU team over a European side on their home soil.[28]
In October 2016, it reached its highest ranking in the FIFA world ranking (73rd place)[29] thanks to its good performance in the 2nd round of the2017 Caribbean Cup of Nations qualifiers.[30] However, two defeats againstFrench Guiana (0–1)[31] andHaiti at home (0–2 a.e.t.) stopped theSugar Boyz in the 3rd round of these qualifiers.[32] The year ends with a 1–1 draw inBasseterre againstEstonia on November 19, 2016, in a friendly match, one year after playing against the same team inTallinn.[33]
In June 2017, the team went on a second European tour and playedArmenia on June 4 inYerevan[34] andGeorgia three days later inTbilisi.[35] Both games ended in equally bad losses, 5–0 and 3–0, respectively.[34][35] St. Kitts and Nevis continued its pattern of international tours and travels in August 2017 toMumbai to meetMauritius andIndia in a friendly tournament, the2017 Hero Tri-Nation Series. Both matches ended in draws acquired by the same score of one goal each.[36][37]
TheSugar Boyz playedAndorra again on March 25, 2022, six and a half years after their first confrontation, for a friendly match inAndorra la Vella. This time the Principality's selection won against Saint Kitts and Nevis on its home stadium (1–0).[38]
They qualified for their first ever CONCACAF Gold Cup in2023.[10]

'Sugar Boyz' - drawn from the country's history of sugar cultivation.
he has led the 120th-ranked Sugar Boyz for over a decade, becoming their captain and leading scorer. With the country boasting a population of just under 55,000, it's always a grind for Harris & Co., who haven't qualified for a Caribbean Cup since 2001
El Salvador and St. Kitts/Nevis played to a 2-2 draw in St. Kitts, but El Salvador scored a 4-1 victory at home to finished with a 6-3 aggregate.
