Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān (صحيح ابن حبان) is a collection ofhadith bySunni scholarIbn Hibban. It has the distinction of being one of small number of collections intended by the respective authors to contain onlyauthentichadith. The author of thisSahih isAbu Hatim Muhammad ibn Hibban ibn Ahmad al-Tamimi al-Busti [ar], from Bust inKhorasan in present-day southernAfghanistan[1] (former name ofHelmand province capital was bost or bust , its new name isLashkargah).[2] He was a prominentShafi'ihadith specialist and prolific author who died in 965 CE.[3]
The actual name of this collection isal Musnad al Sahih al-Taqasim wa al-Anwa`, however, it is commonly referred to asSahih ibn Hibban. The author utilized an innovative method in the arrangement of this work as it is not arranged in topical chapters nor is it based uponamusnad arrangement and is therefore difficult to navigate.[3] Instead, it was arranged first bybab, or chapter, and then under each chapter, bynaw`, or type. The book opens with a lengthy introduction.[4]
TheSahih remains in its entirety as of the late Nineteenth Century or early Twentieth Century, according to al-Kattani, who died in 1926.[3]
The book contains almost seven and a half thousand (7500)hadiths according toAl-Maktaba Al-Shamela.[5]
According to al-Kattani, "it has been said that Ibn Hibban, after ibn Khuzaymah, authored themost authentic hadith collection, afterSahih Bukhari andSahih Muslim".[3] However,al-Suyuti spoke more definitively when saying thatSahih Ibn Khuzaymah was the most authentic collection afterSahih Bukhari andSahih Muslim, followed bySahih Ibn Hibban which, in turn, was more authentic thanAl-Mustadrak alaa al-Sahihain,[6] makingSahih Ibn Hibban the fourth most authentic hadith collection in Suyuti's view.
Al-Ihsan:Ali ibn Balban (d. 739/1339) rearranged the hadith chapters ofSahih Ibn Hibban according to the topics ofjurisprudence and published them asal-Ihsan fi Taqrib Sahih Ibn Hibban.[3]
Mawarid al-Zam'an :Theunique hadith it contains, those not found in eitherSahih Bukhari orSahih Muslim, are arranged in the order ofjurisprudence headings in the bookMawarid al-Zam'an ila Zawa'id Ibn Hibban byAli ibn Abu Bakr al-Haythami (d. 807/1405).[3]
