Saglaarjuk (Inuktitut syllabicsᓴᒡᓛᕐᔪᒃ[1]) formerlyAmherst Island[2] is one of several uninhabited, irregularly shaped islands located on the south side of theFury and Hecla Strait ofNunavut'sQikiqtaaluk Region within thenorthern CanadianArctic. It is west ofLiddon Island, north of Grinnell Lake on the mainland'sMelville Peninsula, and south ofBaffin Island.
The island was, at one time, named forJeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, aBritish Army officer who was command forces that captured Louisburg, Quebec and Montreal from the French and later becameGovernors General of Province of Quebec.
As part of theArctic Archipelago, it was held by the British as part of theBritish Arctic Territories until 1880.
