Saalekreis is a district inSaxony-Anhalt,Germany. The district seat isMerseburg. Its area is 1,434.2 km2 (553.7 sq mi).[2] It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the districtsKyffhäuserkreis (Thuringia),Mansfeld-Südharz,Salzlandkreis,Anhalt-Bitterfeld,Nordsachsen,Leipzig (bothSaxony) andBurgenlandkreis. The district-free city ofHalle is surrounded by the Saalekreis.
The district was established by merging the former districts ofMerseburg-Querfurt andSaalkreis as part of thedistrict reform of 2007.
