SSRosehill, also known asSSPenhill, was a 2,788 GRT steel-hulledcollier built in 1911 by S.P. Austin and Son ofSunderland under the nameMinster. She wastorpedoed by theImperial German NavysubmarineUB-40 in theEnglish Channel offFowey,Cornwall,England, on 23 September 1917 while en route fromCardiff, Wales, toDevonport. She was taken under tow but sank inWhitsand Bay at 18:05. Her wreck lies in 28 metres (92 feet) of water at50°19.793′N4°18.520′W / 50.329883°N 4.308667°W /50.329883; -4.308667 with her bow to the north.
This wreck, which has been adopted byTotnes SAC under the "adopt-a-wreck" scheme, is often overlooked bydivers, as the wrecks of theLiberty shipSS James Eagan Layne andRoyal NavyfrigateHMS Scylla are close by and in shallower water. The wreck is considerably broken up, and is hard to find on anecho sounder.
