Empire Cymric was a 4,820 GRTFerry that was built in 1944 byHarland & Wolff Ltd,Belfast asLST (3)HMSLST 3010 for theRoyal Navy. She was transferred to theKoninklijke Marine in 1945, serving asHNLMSLST 3010. In 1947, she was transferred back to the Royal Navy and renamedHMSAttacker. The ship was requisitioned by theMinistry of Transport in 1954 and renamedEmpire Cymric. Requisitioned briefly during theSuez Crisis in 1956 asHMSEmpire Cymric, she served until 1962, and was scrapped in 1963.
The ship was built in 1944 byHarland & Wolff Ltd,Belfast.[1]
The ship was 347 feet 5 inches (105.89 m) long, with a beam of 55 feet 3 inches (16.84 m).She had a draught of 12 feet 0 inches (3.66 m).[2] She was assessed at 4,820 GRT,[1]
The ship was propelled by a 5,500ihptriple expansion steam engine which was supplied by two 3-drum boilers.[2] It drove twin screw propellers and could propel the ship at 13 knots (24 km/h).[2]
In Royal Navy service, armament was 8 x20mm AA guns.[2]
LST 3010 was launched on 30 September 1944. She was commissioned into theRoyal Navy on 5 April 1945.[3]
LST 3010 was transferred to theKoninklijke Marine in 1945.[2] In February and March 1946,LST 3010 was in service inJava,Dutch East Indies, where awar of independence was taking place.[4] In 1947, she was returned to the Royal Navy and was renamedAttacker. She waschartered by theMinistry of Transport and converted to a ferry. In 1955, she was sold to theAtlantic Steam Navigation Company and renamedEmpire Cymric.[2] Operated on thePreston, Lancashire -Belfast,Northern Ireland route,[5]Empire Cymric was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use during theSuez Crisis. She was escorted fromMalta toPort Said,Egypt byHMS Forth, which escorted her back to Malta after the crisis was over.[6] She served until 1963, arriving on 1 October atFaslane,Dunbartonshire for scrapping.[1]
