SK Gjøvik-Lyn is aNorwegianfootball club based inGjøvik, which was founded on 1 February 1902 asSportsklubben Thor. They play in theNorwegian Second Division, the third highest division in theNorwegian football league system. Their home ground isGjøvik Stadion.
The club's honours include winning the1962 Norwegian Cup.[1] The men's team played in the3. divisjon in2008, and in the2. divisjon as late as in2007. Ahead of the 2009 season, the first team joined the new teamGjøvik FF.[2]
The club was founded on 1 February 1902 asSportsklubben Thor, but changed its name toSportsklubben Lyn in 1903. The club had departments for bothskiing andspeed skating, but these departments left Lyn in 1910 and joinedGjøvik IF together withGjøvik Skiklubb,Gjøvik Tennisklubb andGjøvik Turnforening. The club had only their football department left and therefore changed its name toFotballklubben Lyn. Lyn played its first final in theNorwegian Cup in 1914, but lost the final 2–4 againstFrigg. AfterWorld War II, Fotballklubben Lyn changed their name toSportsklubben Gjøvik-Lyn to distinguish themselves fromLyn from Oslo. Gjøvik-Lyn won the1962 Norwegian Cup afterVard was defeated 2–0 in the final atUllevaal Stadion on 28 October 1962. As Norwegian Cup winners, Gjøvik-Lyn qualified for the first round of the1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup, where they lost 0–7 on aggregate to Cypriot sideAPOEL.
On 15 April 1993, Gjøvik-Lyn was merged withGjøvik SK. Ahead of the 2009 season, the first team joined the new teamGjøvik FF.[2]
On 23 September 2013, the club decided to merge withGjøvik FF and change the club's name toFotballklubben Gjøvik-Lyn, effective from 1 January 2014.[3]
On 10 March 2020, the name of the club was changed back to SK Gjøvik-Lyn.[4]
