Shi Lian Huang, better known asS. L. Huang, is aHugo-winningscience fiction author, as well as the first woman to be a professionalarmorer inHollywood.
Shi Lian Huang, known as Lisa, is fromNew Jersey. She completed a degree in mathematics atMIT before moving to Los Angeles.[1][2] She experiencedHodgkin lymphoma as a child.
After moving toHollywood to become astuntwoman and weapons expert, Huang was diagnosed withbreast cancer, which "derailed her physicality" for a time.[3] She turned to writing when unable to actively work on sets.[3]
She is known for her Cas Russell series, as well as her fantasy novellaBurning Roses released in 2020. She began as a self-published author but was picked up byTor Books.[4] The characters in the Cas Russell books, and thesuperintelligent abilities that they actuate, reflect Huang's background in themathematical sciences.
Huang also writes short fiction, which won her theHugo Award for Best Short Story in 2020 with "As the Last I May Know".[3][5] She has been published in a number of anthologies and magazines includingStrange Horizons andThe Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2016.[3][6][7]
Her work in television includesBattlestar Galactica andRaising Hope, as well as reality showsTop Shot andAuction Hunters.[3] She has trained actors such asNathan Fillion,Sean Patrick Flanery,Jason Momoa, andDanny Glover.
Huang identifies asgenderqueer.[8]
