Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad (born 31 January 1997) is an Indiancricketer who plays for theIndia national cricket team. He is a right-handedtop orderbatter. He captained the Indian team that won the gold medal in the2022 Asian Games.

Ruturaj made hisT20 International debut for the Indian team againstSri Lanka in July 2021. He played his firstOne Day International in October 2022 againstSouth Africa. In domestic cricket, he plays forMaharashtra and captains the side in theT20 andList A formats. He holds the records for the most number ofcenturies overall and the fastest century for Maharashtra in the history of theVijay Hazare TrophyList A tournament. He has also represented theWest Zone and captained theRest of India side in the past.

In franchise cricket, Ruturaj plays for and captains theChennai Super Kings in theIndian Premier League (IPL). He has won the IPL title in2021 and2023 with the Super Kings. He was the leading run-scorer in the2021 IPL season and won emerging player of the season award.

Early and personal life

Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad was born on 31 January 1997 in aMarathi family inPune, Maharashtra.[2][3] His father Dasharath Gaikwad worked with theDefence Research and Development Organisation, and his mother Sawita is a school teacher.[4] He did his schooling fromSt Joseph's Boys' High School inKhadki, and Lakashmibai Nadgude school in Pimple Nilakh, Pune. He attended the Marathvada Mitra Mandal's Polytechnic.[5] According to Ruturaj, his parents encouraged him to take up cricket.[6]

Ruturaj lives in theSangvi area ofPimpri-Chinchwad in Pune.[7][8] On 3 June 2023, he married his long-time girlfriend Utkarsha Pawar atMahabaleshwar.[9]

Domestic career

Ruturaj joined the VarrocDilip Vengsarkar academy inThergaon at the age of 13.[10][11] In the 2010 Cadence trophy, he scored 63runs in a match against Mumbai's MIG Cricket club and was declared theplayer of the match.[12] At the 2015 Maharashtra invitational tournament, he scored 306 runs in an innings.[13]

Ruturaj made hisfirst-class debut forMaharashtra in the2016-17 season of theRanji Trophy on 6 October 2016.[14] He made hisTwenty20 debut in the2016–17 Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament on 2 February 2017,[15] andList A debut in the2016-17 edition of theVijay Hazare Trophy on 25 February 2017.[16] In the Vijay Hazare tournament, he finished as the third highest run getter with 444 runs at anaverage of 63.42 including acentury and three half-centuries.[17] He represented theWest zone in the zonal tournaments.[18] In October 2018, he was named inIndia B squad for the2018–19 Deodhar Trophy.[19] In the2019-20 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 184 runs including acentury for Maharashtra againstChhattisgarh, and was awarded the player of the match for his efforts.[20]

In August 2019, Ruturaj was named in the India Blue squad for the2019–20 Duleep Trophy.[21][22] In the subsequent2019–20 Deodhar Trophy held in October 2019, he was part of the India B squad.[23] He scored four centuries in four matches in the 2019 Mandke trophy.[24] He scored 259 runs in five matches at anaverage of 51.80, including three fifties in the2021-22 season of theSyed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 competition.[25] In the2021–22 season of the Vijay Hazare trophy, he scored over 600 runs with four centuries, and equaledVirat Kohli's earlier record for the maximum centuries in a single edition of the tournament.[26]

In November 2022, during the quarter-final match between Maharashtra andUttar Pradesh in the2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Ruturaj became the first batter to hit sevensixes in a six-ballover (including one of ano ball) in all forms of cricket.[27] In the final againstSaurashtra, he scored another century, his 12th in the history of the tournament. With this, he took the record for the most number of centuries in the tournament, which he earlier jointly held withRobin Uthappa andAnkit Bawne (11 each). He finished as the second highest run-getter in the tournament with 660 runs in five games.[28]

Ruturaj was named the captain of the India C team for the2024-25 Duleep Trophy tournament,[29] in which he ended up in the top five run-getters.[30] He was later named a captain of theRest of India cricket team for the2024-25 Irani Cup match againstMumbai.[31] In December 2024, in the Vijay Hazare trophy match againstServices, he recorded the fastest century for Maharastra in 57 balls.[32] In August 2025, he was named in the West zone squad for2025-26 Duleep Trophy, playing his first professional game since his elbow injury in April.[33] He scored 200 runs across two innings including an unbeaten 184 in the first innings.[34] He was named as the vice-captain for the Rest Of India team for the2025-26 Irani Cup against theRanji Trophy winnersVidarbha.[35]

In the opening match of the2025-26 Ranji Trophy season againstKerala, Maharashtra lost fivewickets for 18 runs, before Ruturaj andJalaj Saxena stitched a partnership of 122 runs with Ruturaj himself scoring 91 runs. The match ended in adraw, Ruturaj was awarded the player of the match award.[36] In the second match againstChandigarh, he scored 142 runs across two innings including a century in the first innings to help Maharashtra secure a win. He shared the player of the match award with team-matePrithvi Shaw.[37]

International career

In December 2018, Ruturaj was named in the Indian under-23 team for the2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.[38] In June 2019, he scored 187 runs forIndia A in the win againstSri Lanka A and was awarded the player of the match.[39]

In June 2021, Ruturaj was named in theIndia squad for theOne Day International (ODI) andTwenty20 International (T20I) matches for theaway series againstSri Lanka.[40] He made his T20I debut on 28 July 2021 in the second match of the series.[41] Though he was named in India's ODI squad for theiraway series againstSouth Africa in December 2021,[42] and thehome series against theWest Indies in January 2022, he did not play any of the matches.[43] In June 2022, he scored his maiden T20I half-centuryagainst South Africa.[44] In July 2022, he was again named in India's ODI squad for their away seriesagainst the West Indies, without playing a match.[45] On 6 October 2022, he made his ODI debut in the first match of thehome series against South Africa.[46][47]

In June 2023, Ruturaj was named in theTest squad for the first time for theaway series against the West Indies.[48] In July 2023, he was named as India's vice-captain for the seriesaway series againstIreland.[49] He ended the series as the leading run scorer with 77 runs from the two matches.[50] In September 2023, he was part of the ODI squad for the first two matches in thehome series againstAustralia.[51] On September 22, he scored 71 runs in the first match of the series which was his maiden half-century in ODIs.[52] In July 2023, he was named as captain of the Indian T20I team for the2022 Asian Games.[53] He led India to win the gold medal in the competition and became the first Indian captain to do so inMen's Cricket at the Asian Games and the first Indian captain to win the medal at the Asian Games.[54]

In November 2023, Ruturaj was named the vice-captain for the first three matches of the T20Iseries against Australia.[55] After aduck in the first match, he followed that up with a half-century in the second T20I and scored his maiden international century in the third match of the series.[56] His performance (127 runs) in the third match secured multiple records including becoming the third highest score by an Indian batter, the first Indian to score a century against Australia in T20Is and the highest score by a batter against Australia in T20Is.[57] In June 2024, he was named in the Indian squad for thetour of Zimbabwe. In the second match of the series againstZimbabwe, he scored 77 runs in 49 balls in a 137 run partnership withAbhishek Sharma.[58] In the next match, he hit 49 runs of 28 balls in a win for the Indian team.[59]

In October 2024, Ruturaj was named as the captain of the India A side for thetour of Australia to play two first class games.[60] While he was initially named as a part of the India A squad for thetour of England, he didn't feature due to his elbow injury sustained earlier.[61]

Ruturaj made a comeback to the India A team for the home series againstSouth Africa A in November 2025.[62][63]in which he scored 210 runs across the three match series, most by anyone, He was awarded Man of the Series for his match winning performances.[64]

Franchise career

In December 2018, Ruturaj was bought by theChennai Super Kings in theplayer auction for the2019 season of theIndian Premier League (IPL).[65][66] He made his debut for the Super Kings during the2020 season of the IPL.[67] On 2 October 2021, he scored his first IPL century, with anunbeaten 101 against theRajasthan Royals in the2021 season.[68] In the finals, the Super Kings beat theKolkata Knight Riders to win their fourth IPL title.[69][70] He won theOrange Cap for scoring the most runs (635) in the 2021 season and was also awarded theEmerging Player of the Year award.[71][72][73] After his performance in the 2021 season, he was retained by the Super Kings for60 million (US$710,000) ahead of the2022 IPL auction.[74] In the2023 IPL season, he scored 590 runs across 14 matches and was amongst the top ten run scorers in the tournament.[67][75] The team finished second in the group stage with 17 points from eight wins.[76] The Super Kings beat defending championsGujarat Titans by five wickets to win a record equaling fifth IPL title.[69][77][78]

On 21 March 2024, Ruturaj was appointed as the captain of the Super Kings following the decision of long-term captainM S Dhoni to step down from the role.[79][80] He had an excellent tournament with the bat during the2024 IPL season, finishing second on the run scoring charts with 583 runs.[67][81] However, the Super Kings finished with 14 points from seven wins from 14 matches, and was tied with three other teams in the competition for the fourth and final play-off spot.[82][83] However, the team was classified fifth on netrun rate, and qualify for the IPL playoffs for only the third time in the history of the competition.[84] He played only five matches in the2025 IPL season,[67] before being ruled out of the tournament with an elbow injury.[85]

In 2023, Ruturaj was bought by Puneri Bappa in the Maharashtra Premier League T20 competition for148 million (US$1.8 million). The franchise later named as announced him as the captain for inaugural season.[86][87] He signed withYorkshire for the County Championship in 2025, which also includedOne-Day cup stint.[88] However, he later pulled out of the deal due to personal reasons.[89]
