Ruminococcus is a genus of bacteria in the classClostridia.[2] They are anaerobic,Gram-positivegut microbes. One or more species in this genus are found in significant numbers in the humangut microbiota. The type species isR. flavefaciens. As usual, bacteria taxonomy is in flux, with Clostridia beingparaphyletic, and some erroneous members ofRuminococcus being reassigned to a new genusBlautia on the basis of16S rRNA gene sequences.[3]

One of the most highly cited papers involving the genusRuminococcus is a paper describinginterspecies hydrogen transfer betweenRuminococcus albus andWolinella succinogenes.[4]

In 1972,Ruminococcus bromii was reportedly found in the human gut, which was the first of several species discovered.[5] They may play a role in plant cell wall breakdown in thecolon.[6]

One study found thatR. albus,R. callidus, andR. bromii are less abundant in people withinflammatory bowel disease.[7]Ruminococcus are also less abundant in patients withParkinson's disease[8] andamyotrophic lateral sclerosis.[9][10]R. gnavus is associated withCrohn's disease.[11]
