Rubigula is agenus of Asianpasserine birds in the bulbul family,Pycnonotidae.
The genusRubigula was introduced in 1845 by the English zoologistEdward Blyth.[1] Thetype species was designated as theruby-throated bulbul byGeorge Robert Gray in 1855.[2][3] The name combines theMedieval Latinrubinus meaning "ruby" withLatingula meaning "throat".[4]
This genus was formerlysynonymized with the genusPycnonotus. Amolecular phylogenetic study of thebulbul family published in 2017 found thatPycnonotus waspolyphyletic.[5] In the revision to the generic classification five species were moved fromPycnonotus toRubigula.[6]
