Rubén Darío Amorín Mattos[1] (6 November 1927 – 24 December 2014) was a Uruguayanfootball player who played as aforward andcoach.
Amorín was born inRocha. He arrived in 1952 inGuatemala to play forGuatemala FC.
Amorín spent the majority of his coaching career in Guatemala, where he won a record eight national titles with three clubs from 1964 to 1992,[2] He guidedMunicipal andComunicaciones to theCONCACAF Champions Cup in1974 and1978.
He also recorded five tenures as coach of theGuatemala national team, winning the 1967 NORCECA Championship (now theCONCACAF Gold Cup) which is the highest international honor for that national team to date. He retired in 1994.[3]
Due to his success at both the club and international level, Amorín is considered the greatest coach in the history of Guatemalan football by the local press and football personalities.[4]
On 24 December 2014, he died ofAlzheimer's disease at the age of 87.[5]
