Rossaveal orRossaveel (Irish:Ros an Mhíl orRos a' Mhíl) is aGaeltacht village andtownland in theConnemara district ofCounty Galway in the west of Ireland. It is the main ferry port for theAran Islands inGalway Bay. It is about 37 kilometres (23 mi) fromGalway city. The village is located in thebarony of Moycullen.[1][2]
The Irish nameRos an Mhíl means "peninsula (or wood) of the whale (or sea monster)".[3] It may also mean "the wooded hill".[4][5] The village is the home of theRos a' Mhíl centre underColáiste Chamuis, anIrish language immersion summer camp for teenagers. It is served byBus Éireann route 424 from Galway.[6] A ferry service to theAran Islands runs from the harbour.[citation needed]
As of the 2011 census, there were 208 people living inRos an Mhíl townland, with 73% of these speakingIrish daily.[7]
