Charles Ross Coyle (born March 23, 1937) is an American former professionalfootball player who played for theLos Angeles Rams of theNational Football League (NFL), and theToronto Argonauts andCalgary Stampeders of theCanadian Football League (CFL). He playedcollege football for theOklahoma Sooners.

Early life and college

Charles Ross Coyle was born on March 23, 1937, inMarlow, Oklahoma.[1] He attended Marlow High School in Marlow.[1]

Coyle was a member of theOklahoma Sooners of theUniversity of Oklahoma from 1955 to 1958 and a three-yearletterman atend from 1956 to 1958.[1][2] He caught one pass for six yards in 1956 as Oklahoma were named consensus national champions.[3] He recorded four catchesfor 114 yards in 1957 and earnedAssociated Press (AP) second-team All-Big Seven honors.[3][4] As a senior in 1958, Coyle caught six passes for 161 yards and one touchdown, garnering AP andUnited Press first-team All-Big Seven recognition.[5][6][3]

Professional career

Coyle was selected by theLos Angeles Rams in the 20th round, with the 237th overall pick, of the1959 NFL draft.[7] However, he instead signed with theToronto Argonauts of theCanadian Football League on January 28, 1959.[8] He played in 13 games for the Argonauts during the 1959 season as an end anddefensive back, recording 12 receptions for 176 yards and four touchdowns while also intercepting five passes.[1]

On September 2, 1960, Coyle andAl Schlosser were traded to theCalgary Stampeders forLynn Bottoms.[9] Coyle appeared in ten games for the Stampeders that year as an offensive end andlinebacker, totaling seven catches for 89 yards and also two interceptions.[1]

Coyle signed with theLos Angeles Rams on September 12, 1961.[8] He played in 13 games during the 1961 season as asafety.[7] He became a free agent after the season.[8][1]
