Rosemary Betterton

Rosemary Betterton (born 1951) is an Englishfeminist art historian, writer, and educator. She is recognized for her work in the field ofContemporary Art, particularly her inquiries into women's art practices.[1]

Biography

Rosemary Betterton was born in 1951.[2] She is British.[3]

Betterton taughtart history andcritical studies atSheffield Hallam University[4] and served as a faculty member atUniversity of Lancaster teaching in the areas ofvisual culture andfeminist theory.[5] She isProfessor Emerita atLancaster University.[6]

Betterton is the author of many books and essays.[6]Maternal Bodies in the Visual Arts analyzes images and texts to make the argument that pregnancy, inWestern culture, is viewed and depicted with profoundambivalence by both feminists and non-feminists.[7]Women, Artists and The Body presents a discussion of how twentieth century women have sought to understand and influence where they fit into Western culture and art.[8]
