Ronald F. Maxwell (born January 5, 1949) is an American filmmaker who is best known for writing and directing theAmerican Civil War historical fiction filmsGettysburg (1993),Gods and Generals (2003), andCopperhead (2013).
A native ofNew Jersey, Maxwell attendedClifton High School.[1] He graduated from the Institute of Film atNew York University (NYU)'sTisch School of the Arts in 1970. Maxwell is a member of theWriters Guild of America,Directors Guild of America, and theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In 2007, Maxwell optioned the film rights to novelistSpeer Morgan's 1979 bookBelle Starr, about the legendaryfemale outlaw of the Old West.
In May 2011,Warner Bros. Pictures released director's cuts ofGods and Generals andGettysburg.
In 2012, Maxwell directed his third Civil War feature,Copperhead, with a screenplay byBill Kauffman and production by Bryan Cassels. Filming was completed inNew Brunswick, Canada, in June 2012.[2]
