Filipino comics artist (born 1943)
Romeo Tanghal (born July 24, 1947)[ 1] is aFilipino comics artist who has worked primarily as aninker . He became well known in the industry in the 1980s for his work onDC Comics 'The New Teen Titans .[ 2]
Romeo Tanghal was born and raised in thePhilippines . A self–taught artist, he started doing comics illustrations after graduating high school. He briefly worked with variouslocal publications before emigrating to the United States in 1976.[ 2] Tanghal's first published work in the U.S. was "If There Were No Batman... I Would Have to Invent Him" inBatman #284 (Feb. 1977) forDC Comics .[ 3] He then drew short stories forHouse of Mystery ,House of Secrets , andWeird War Tales .[ 3] He later worked on such features asSuper Friends , "Scalphunter " inWeird Western Tales , and "Gravedigger " inMen of War . In 1980, Tanghal became the inker ofGeorge Pérez 's penciled artwork onThe New Teen Titans .[ 3] Tanghal drew two origin stories for DC's digest line during this time, a ten-page short story inDC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #5 (Nov.–Dec. 1980) featuringZatara andZatanna [ 4] and the origin of thePenguin inThe Best of DC #10 (March 1981).[ 5] Tanghal began working forMarvel Comics as well in 1986. He inked the comics adaptations of such films asLabyrinth ,[ 6] Elvira, Mistress of the Dark , andWillow .[ 3] Tanghal did character design and storyboards forSunbow Entertainment from 1985 to 1987.[ 7]
Tanghal received anInkpot Award in 2013.[ 8]
