Romeo Tanghal (born July 24, 1947)[1] is aFilipino comics artist who has worked primarily as aninker. He became well known in the industry in the 1980s for his work onDC Comics'The New Teen Titans.[2]

Career

Romeo Tanghal was born and raised in thePhilippines. A self–taught artist, he started doing comics illustrations after graduating high school. He briefly worked with variouslocal publications before emigrating to the United States in 1976.[2] Tanghal's first published work in the U.S. was "If There Were No Batman... I Would Have to Invent Him" inBatman #284 (Feb. 1977) forDC Comics.[3] He then drew short stories forHouse of Mystery,House of Secrets, andWeird War Tales.[3] He later worked on such features asSuper Friends, "Scalphunter" inWeird Western Tales, and "Gravedigger" inMen of War. In 1980, Tanghal became the inker ofGeorge Pérez's penciled artwork onThe New Teen Titans.[3] Tanghal drew two origin stories for DC's digest line during this time, a ten-page short story inDC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #5 (Nov.–Dec. 1980) featuringZatara andZatanna[4] and the origin of thePenguin inThe Best of DC #10 (March 1981).[5] Tanghal began working forMarvel Comics as well in 1986. He inked the comics adaptations of such films asLabyrinth,[6]Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, andWillow.[3] Tanghal did character design and storyboards forSunbow Entertainment from 1985 to 1987.[7]
