TheDiocese of Arbe orDiocese of Rab orDiocese of Arba (Latin:Dioecesis Arbensis) was a Roman Catholic diocese located in the town ofArbe (modern day Rab) on the Croatian island of the same name located just off the Adriatic coast of northernDalmatia, inCroatia, where still stands the formercathedral, dedicated to theAssumption of Mary.
The diocese was ancient as it was founded no later than 532, and in the papal sway, originally assuffragan of the MetropolitanArchdiocese of Salona, later transferred to theecclesiastical province of theArchdiocese of Spalato (later Salona, then Split, now Spalato-Macarsca).[citation needed]
On 17 October 1154 it becamesuffragan of the MetropolitanArchdiocese of Zara.[citation needed]
On 30 June 1828, while inner Dalmatia was part of theAustrian empire, the bishopric was suppressed byPope Leo XII'spapal bullaLocum Beati Petri, along with theDiocese of Ossero, and their territories merged into theDiocese of Veglia, also called theDiocese of Krk.[1][2]
