Major-GeneralRoland Le Fanu,DSO, MC (13 May 1888 – 2 January 1957) was a seniorBritish Army officer.
Le Fanu, after being educated in Germany and briefly serving in theRoyal Navy, and later transferring to theRoyal Irish Fusiliers of theBritish Army, was commissioned into theLeicestershire Regiment in 1908.[1][2] Like many of his contemporaries, he saw service during theFirst World War, for which he was awarded both theMilitary Cross and theDistinguished Service Order.[3]
After attending theStaff College, Camberley from 1925 to 1926, alongsideWalter Oxley,Raymond Briggs,Francis Tuker,Frank Messervy,Ronald Scobie,John Swayne and the AustralianSydney Rowell, who were among his classmates,[2] he became a staff officer at theWar Office in March 1931, and from 1931 to 1932 attended theRoyal Naval College, Greenwich.[2] He was then deployed to the Rawalpindi District in India in December 1935.[4] He was appointed a companion of theDistinguished Service Order for his service during theWaziristan campaign.[5] He went on to become General Officer Commanding15th (Scottish) Infantry Division in August 1939 at the start of theSecond World War before retiring in October 1940.[4]
His son,Sir Victor de Fanu, served asSerjeant at Arms of the House of Commons in the 1980s.[6]
