Rohit Shetty (born 14 March 1974) is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, stuntman, producer and television personality who works inHindi cinema . A notable director of Hindi cinema,[ 1] [ 2] [ 3] his movies often mix the genres ofaction comedy andmasala films .
His breakthrough came with the first installment of the comedy film franchiseGolmaal (2006), starringAjay Devgn andArshad Warsi , which became a sleeper hit. Further subsequent successful films in the franchise includedGolmaal Returns (2008) andGolmaal 3 (2010), which became one of thehighest-grossing films of the year .
Shetty returned to the action genre withSingham (2011) after eight years of his debut action thrillerZameen (2003). It also starred Ajay Devgn in the lead; the film turned out to be one of thehighest grossers of the year . Later on, it expanded into theCop Universe with other successful films such asSingham Returns (2014),Simmba (2018),Sooryavanshi (2021) andSingham Again (2024). His other notable successes includeAll the Best: Fun Begins (2009),Bol Bachchan (2012), andChennai Express (2013), starringShah Rukh Khan , which became thehighest grossing Hindi film , surpassing3 Idiots at that time.
Apart from film directing, he has also hosts the stunt-based adventure showFear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi since 2014.[ 4] Rohit is identified for his one-liners and comic timing.[ 5]
Shetty was born toM. B. Shetty , anaction choreographer and Ratna, ajunior artist .[ 6] [ 7] His father belonged to theTulu -speaking community fromMangalore , while his mother was fromMadhya Pradesh .[ 8] His grandmother is fromAfghanistan . Shetty speaks Hindi at home.[ 8]
1991–2002: Early work[ edit ] Shetty began his career at the age of 17 as an assistant director inAjay Devgn's first filmPhool Aur Kaante .[ 9] He then worked with Devgn inSuhaag (where he was a body double forAkshay Kumar , who was its second main hero) andHaqeeqat , and with Kumar inZulmi . He then joined the Devgn starrersPyaar To Hona Hi Tha ,Hindustan Ki Kasam andRaju Chacha .[ 10]
2003–2009: Directorial debut and breakthrough[ edit ] Shetty debuted as an independent director in 2003 with the Devgn starrerZameen , an average grosser, before he rose to fame in 2006 when he directed thefirst part of Devgn's cult comedy seriesGolmaal that became his first hit.[ 11] His next two directorials—the comic thrillerSunday and the successful sequel ofGolmaal namedGolmaal Returns (both featuring Devgn)–were released theatrically in 2008 followed byAll the Best: Fun Begins in 2009.[ 12]
2010–2021: Commercial success[ edit ] Shetty (left) andAjay Devgn in 2010. They have worked together in 10 films since 2003 The third part ofGolmaal series titledGolmaal 3 (again starring Devgn) that opened theatrically in 2010 ended up as Shetty's first and an surprisingblockbuster that entered100 Crore Club domestically.[ 13] Continuing his collaborations with Devgn, Shetty begun hisCop Universe in 2011 through his action filmSingham (that saw Devgn portray a police inspector fighting againstcorruption ) and directed the comedyBol Bachchan (also featuringAbhishek Bachchan ) in 2012; both films were super hits and crossed 100 Crore Club domestically.[ 14]
Shetty'sChennai Express , starringShah Rukh Khan andDeepika Padukone , was released on 9 August 2013.[ 15] [ 16] Chennai Express became thehighest-grossing Bollywood film in the domestic market.[ 17] [ 18] The film earned over US$17.4 million to become thethird-highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas .[ 19] The film also set a number of box office records, for the highest opening-day gross, highest paid preview, highest single-day gross, biggest opening weekend, highest opening week and the fastest film to reach₹ 100 crore and₹ 2 billion in the domestic market.[ 20]
Shetty has played the judge of the television showComedy Circus .[ 21]
In 2014, Shetty directedSingham Returns with Ajay Devgn, a sequel to his 2011 filmSingham .[ 22] He was also a part of the fifth season of television stunt game showFear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi in 2014 as the host taking over from the previous hostAkshay Kumar .[ 23] In 2014, he turned into a producer withSingham Returns , co-producing the film under his banner Rohit Shetty Productions. He directedDilwale withShah Rukh Khan andKajol , which was a moderate box-office success. He reprised his role as host in season 6 and 8–11 ofFear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi .
Shetty next directedGolmaal Again , the fourth film of the Golmaal series. The film, starring Ajay Devgn andParineeti Chopra in the lead roles, was released in October 2017, and received mixed reviews. It became the highest grossing Hindi film in 2017, the first Hindiblockbuster of 2017,[ 24] [ 25] as well as the highest grossingDiwali release of all time. He directed then directed the 2018 action comedy,Simmba , starringRanveer Singh ,Sara Ali Khan andSonu Sood in the lead roles, withAjay Devgn in a guest appearance as Bajirao Singham.
Shetty directed another feature in theCop Universe ,Sooryavanshi , starringAkshay Kumar ,Katrina Kaif andJackie Shroff , which was released during Diwali in 2021. It was the first major release fromHindi Cinema afterlockdown due to COVID-19, the film becamehighest grossing Hindi film of the year. Shetty has made his OTT debut withIndian Police Force , starringSidharth Malhotra forAmazon Prime Video .[ 26]
2022–present: Career fluctuations[ edit ] In 2022, Shetty took break from action films and directed period comedy dramaCirkus , loosely adapted fromWilliam Shakespeare 'sThe Comedy of Errors . It starsRanveer Singh andVarun Sharma , both in double roles, alongsidePooja Hegde andJacqueline Fernandez .[ 27] The film was both a major critical and commercial failure, holding a 0% rating onRotten Tomatoes ,[ 28] and emerged as one of the biggest flops of 2022.[ 29]
The following year, Shetty marked hisMarathi film debut by producing the coming-of-age romantic filmSchool College Ani Life (2023), directed by Vihan Suryavanshi and starring Karan Parab,Tejasswi Prakash , andJitendra Joshi . Shetty had been planning to do a Marathi film from a long time on the demand of his regional fans.[ 30] Anub George ofThe Times of India wrote a mixed review, criticizing the slow second act and clichéd plot, but praised the cast performances and cinematography, writing, "the film offers multiple moments of pure joy and emotion in a visual treat of an experience."[ 31]
He returned to directing withSingham Again (2024), the fifth installment of Shetty'sCop Universe .[ 32] Ajay Devgn stars the film, reprising his title role of Bajirao Singham, alongside an ensemble star cast that includesAkshay Kumar ,Ranveer Singh ,Tiger Shroff ,Kareena Kapoor Khan ,Deepika Padukone ,Arjun Kapoor andJackie Shroff . The film released onDiwali to mixed to negative reviews, with vital criticism focused on its clichéd storyline, illogical scenes, lack of originality, and poor adaptation ofRamayana ' s plot,[ 33] [ 34] while some critics praised its action sequences and mass appeal.[ 35] [ 36] The film was made on a high budget of₹ 375 crore, making it one ofmost expensive Indian films of all time , but underperformed theatrically, earning₹ 389 crore globally, despite being one of thehighest grossing Indian films of 2024 .[ 37] [ 38] However,Singham Again made profit through the sale of its satelite, music, and streaming rights, earning around₹ 180-₹ 200 crore.[ 39] It eventually emerged as a moderate success financially.[ 40]
