Latvianrock has been an important part ofLatvia's music scene since the 1980s, when it was a part of the discontent withSoviet rule.[1]
The city ofLiepāja has an especially active rock scene.Līvi,Credo and Remix are fromLiepāja, as are rock composersImants Kalniņš andZigmars Liepiņš.
In the 1980s,Pērkons played a pompous sort of hard rock that was popular with audiences. Underground studio-based groupsNSRD andDzeltenie Pastnieki introduced extensive use of electronic instrumentation, whileZig Zag andAurora brought guitar-basedpost-punk tendencies (though about ten years after the fact).[clarification needed]
In 1988,rock operaLāčplēsis by Zigmars Liepiņš and Māra Zālīte, based on thenational epic, became a hit, withIgo (Rodrigo Fomins) in the title role of Lāčplēsis.
Inokentijs Mārpls,Baložu Pilni Pagalmi andSirke are among the most important acts within the later alternative scene.
In the 2000sOlive Mess reached international success in theprogressive rock scene.
