Early life

Born inKidderminster,Worcestershire, Oakley grew up inEsher, Surrey.[2] He was educated atWellington College, Berkshire, andBrasenose College, Oxford.[3][1]

Career

He started his career on theLiverpool Daily Post where he became political editor. He was then a columnist and political editor onThe Sunday Express and was assistant editor of theDaily Mail from 1981 to 1986. Between 1986 and 1992, he was a columnist and political editor forThe Times. In 1992, he moved to theBBC, where he was political editor.[4] He was succeeded as political editor a in summer 2000 byAndrew Marr, despite having hoped to remain at the BBC to cover theupcoming general election.[5][6] After leaving the BBC, Oakley becameCNN International's European political editor.[4]

Oakley also has an interest inhorse racing, and has written the Turf column inThe Spectator since 1994, as well as being the racing correspondent of theFinancial Times for several years.[7] He has written a number of books about racing.

Honours

Oakley was awarded anOrder of the British Empire in 2001 for his services to political journalism.[4]
