Robert Woodrow Levering (October 3, 1914 – August 11, 1989) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as aU.S. Representative fromOhio from 1959 to 1961.
He was the son-in-law ofUsher L. Burdick and brother-in-law ofQuentin N. Burdick.
Born nearFredericktown, Ohio was son of Gertrude Alice and Daniel Lloyd Levering, Levering graduated fromFredericktown High School. He earned hisBachelor of Arts in 1936 fromDenison University,Granville, Ohio, and hisBachelor of Laws in 1940 fromGeorge Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C. He was a librarian at theLibrary of Congress from 1937 to 1941, and was a lawyer in private practice.
In July 1941, he became a civilian attorney working for theUnited States War Department in Manila, Philippines, where he became aprisoner of war duringWorld War II from 1942 to 1945.[1][2] He served as assistant attorney general of Ohio from 1949 to 1950. He was an unsuccessfulDemocratic candidate for election to Congress in 1948, 1950, 1954, and 1956.
Levering was in theUnited States Army Reserve and was promoted to Major in 1960.[3]
Levering was elected as aDemocrat to theEighty-sixth Congress (January 3, 1959 – January 3, 1961). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to theEighty-seventh Congress in 1960 and for election in 1962, 1964, and 1968.
He died on August 11, 1989, inFredericktown, Ohio, and his remains were cremated.
