Robert V. Kohn (born in 1953) is an Americanmathematician working onpartial differential equations,calculus of variations, mathematicalmaterials science, andmathematical finance. He is a professor at theCourant Institute of Mathematical Sciences,New York University.[1]

Biography

Kohn studied mathematics atHarvard University, obtaining his bachelor's degree in 1974. He obtained his Ph.D. atPrinceton University in 1979, as a student ofFrederick Almgren.[2][3]

Work

Kohn is best known for his work onnon-linear partial differential equations, including work withLouis Nirenberg andLuis Caffarelli in which they obtained partial results about the regularity of weak solutions of theNavier–Stokes equations.[4]

Honors

He received aSloan Research Fellowship in 1984.[5] In 2006, he was a plenary speaker at theInternational Congress of Mathematicians, in Madrid (Energy driven pattern formation).[6] He is a fellow of theAmerican Mathematical Society.[7] He is an elected member ofAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences.[8]
