Robert Rendel (2 December 1884 inSt Mary Abbots Kensington, London – 9 May 1944 in Marylebone, London) was a British actor of stage, screen, television and radio.[1][2][3][4]
His stage work included roles in the originalBroadway productions ofSomerset Maugham'sThe Circle in 1921, andArnold Ridley'sThe Ghost Train in 1926.[5] In 1935 he played theDuke of Marlborough inNorman Ginsbury'sViceroy Sarah. On film, he playedSherlock Holmes in the originalsound version ofThe Hound of the Baskervilles in 1932.[6]
Also noted Contract Bridge author: "How's Your Bridge" with Sydney Lenz. "That extra Trick" and "The squeeze at auction and Contract Bridge" Rendell adopted the term "squeeze" from baseball.
