Robert George Morkot,FSA (born 1957) is anarchaeologist and academic, specialising inAncient Egypt. He is aSenior Lecturer in Archaeology at theUniversity of Exeter. His current research is focused on the external relations of Ancient Egypt, particularly the relations withKush (Sudan). He also works on thehistoriography of Ancient Egypt.[1]
Morkot worked at thePetrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology before completing a PhD atUniversity College London (1983–1987) on the relations of Egypt with Kush between 1500 and 700 BC. He was a Fellow at theOriental Institute, Oxford from 1987 to 1991 and taught atThe City University and theUniversity of Surrey before he joined the University of Exeter in 1996.[2]
Morkot contributed to the 1991 bookCenturies of Darkness, edited byPeter James. The book, questioning the conventionalEgyptian chronology, caused a stir in the academic community and beyond; its thesis remains controversial.[2]
In addition to his academic work, Morkot has written a number of books on Egypt aimed at the general public, along with a book on Greek history, the Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Greece.
On 12 March 2015, Morkot was electedFellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA).[3]
