
Robert Henry Gibbs Jr. (1929–1988) was an Americanichthyologist. He was a long-standingcurator at theNational Museum of Natural History and devoted much of his career to the study ofpelagic anddeep-sea fishes. He was also an avidconservationist and a member of theAmerican Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists for over 30 years.[1]
The Society honored him posthumously with the Robert H. Gibbs Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence in Systematic Ichthyology, whose recipients have includedshark authorityLeonard J.V. Compagno, andanglerfish authorityTheodore W. Pietsch.[2]
