Robert Emil Soave Jr. (/swɑːveɪ/,SWAH-vay)[1] is alibertarian American journalist. Soave is a senior editor forReason and co-host ofThe Hill's web news commentary series programRising.[2][3]
Soave was born in and grew up in theIndian Village district[citation needed] ofDetroit and graduated from theUniversity of Michigan.[4]
In 2015, he won a Southern California Journalism Award from theLos Angeles Press Club for his writing about theRolling Stone story "A Rape on Campus".[5][6] He was named inForbes' "30 under 30" list in 2016.[6] In 2019, he gained media attention for his writings defending theCovington Catholic High School students involved in theLincoln Memorial confrontation.[7][8][9]
In Soave's first book,Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump, he profiles youngprogressive activists as well as those on the political right, and discusses issues such asintersectionality,political correctness, and free speech on college campuses.[10][3][11] Writing inThe Guardian, reviewer J. Oliver Conroy calledPanic Attack "a methodical, earnest and often insightful work of reporting and analysis, not a fiery polemic."[12]
In his second book,Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future, Soave questions conventional wisdom about the negative effects ofsocial media,[13] and argues that increased regulation of platforms likeTwitter andFacebook could stifle free speech and do more harm than good.[14]
He lives inWashington, D.C., with his wife, Carrie, and he serves on the D.C. Advisory Committee to theU.S. Commission on Civil Rights.[4]
