Riomaggiore (Ligurian:Rimazzô, locallyRimazùu[3]) is a village andcomune in theprovince of La Spezia, situated in a smallvalley in theLiguria region ofItaly. It is the first of theCinque Terre villages one encounters when travelling north fromLa Spezia.

The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and wine produced by the town'svineyards. Riomaggiore is in theRiviera di Levante region. It has a shoreline on theMediterranean'sGulf of Genoa, with a small beach and awharf framed bytower houses. Riomaggiore's main street is Via Colombo, where numerous restaurants, bars, and shops can be found.

TheVia dell'Amore is a path connecting Riomaggiore to itsfrazioneManarola, also part of theCinque Terre.

Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the fiveCinque Terre, all connected bytrail. The water and mountainside have been declarednational parks.

Riomaggiore inspired paintings byTelemaco Signorini (1835–1901), one of the artists of theMacchiaioli group.

Transportation

Riomaggiore railway station is on theGenoa–Pisa railway. It is served by trains run byTrenitalia, including services fromLa Spezia Centrale.

Inside Riomaggiore, all major attractions are walkable for tourists.

In popular culture

Riomaggiore was featured in the 2014 driving video gameForza Horizon 2. The village was not featured as the central location but was referenced on various road signs.

Riomaggiore and other Cinque Terre towns were the inspiration for the fictional Portorosso in the 2021 animated filmLuca.[4]
