Rieti Airport (Italian:Aeroporto di Rieti,ICAO:LIQN)[2] is anaerodrome located 1.34 nautical miles (2.48 km; 1.54 mi) northwest ofRieti,[1] a city in theLazio region inItaly.[3] It is also known asG. Ciuffelli Airport.[4]
The aerodrome is operated by theMinistry of Transport and Navigation and administered by theItalian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) ofRome/Ciampino. Theair traffic service (ATS) authority isENAV S.p.A.[1] Prior to 1997 it was a military airport operated by theItalian Air Force.[5]
The airport resides in theRieti Plain, at anelevation of 1,278 feet (390 m) abovemean sea level. It has two runways withgrass surfaces. The main runway 16R/34L measures 809 by 50 metres (2,654 ft × 164 ft) and is used by aircraft withengines. The secondary runway 16L/34R measures 809 by 40 metres (2,654 ft × 131 ft) and is used byglider aircraft. Operation ofultralight aircraft is restricted to three one-hour time periods each day, during which other air traffic is prohibited.[1]
The airport hosts a helicopter base which, until 2016, was operated by theState Forestry Corps; after the dissolution of the agency, the base is operated byCarabinieri.
The airport also hosts some facilities used by students of Rieti's military school forCBRN defense: theshooting range and the "NUBICH" exercise area.
Air currents in theRieti Plain are particularly favorable forgliding and offer the best conditions to fly, so the airport is well known among gliders all over the world;[6] it hosted the 1982, 1994 and 2015 editions of theEuropean Gliding Championships.[7]
