Ricki Stern is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, most known for her documentarian work, and author. She works alongsideAnne Sundberg. She is most known forThe Trials of Darryl Hunt (2006),The Devil Came on Horseback (2007),The End of America (2007),Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010),Surviving Jeffrey Epstein (2020), andSurviving Death (2021).

Career

Stern made her directorial debut withNeglect Not the Children, narrated byMorgan Freeman forPBS.[1] In 1999, Stern directedIn My Corner, a documentary following a boxing gym in the Bronx.[2]

In 2006, Stern co-directed and served as a producer onThe Trials of Darryl Hunt, which follows the case of wrongly convictedDarryl Hunt, the film had its world premiere at theSundance Film Festival in January 2006, and was released in June 2007.[3] Stern next directedThe Devil Came on Horseback, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007, and premiered onNational Geographic in April 2008.[4][5] That same year, Stern co-directedThe End of America, based upon thebook of the same name byNaomi Wolf.[6]

In 2009, Stern co-wrote with Heidi Pesky Worcester, the children's novelBeryl E. Bean: Mighty Adventurer of the Planet.[7] Stern next co-directedJoan Rivers: A Piece of Work which followed comedianJoan Rivers, which had its world premiere at theSundance Film Festival in January 2010.[8] It was released in June 2010 byIFC Films to critical acclaim.[9][10] That same year, Stern co-directed with Sundberg andNic Dunlop,Burma Soldier narrated byColin Farrel,[11][12] Stern next co-directedSecret Access: UFOS ON the Record, which premiered on theHistory Channel in August 2011.[13]

In 2012, Stern co-directedKnuckleball! which follows baseball players relying on knuckleball.[14][15] In 2013, Stern co-directedLet Them Wear Towels, a short documentary film followingSports Illustrated reporterMelissa Ludtke being denied access to theNew York Yankees players locker room, andLisa Olson a reporter forThe Boston Herald who was sexually harassed byNew York Patriot members during an interview.[16] From 2014 to 2016, Stern co-directedThe Fashion Fund a documentary series forAmazon Prime Video following a competition led byAnna Wintour andDiane von Furstenberg nominating promising designers to prove their place in the future of fashion.[17]

In 2015, Stern co-directedIn My Father's House following musicianRhymefest.[18] In 2016, Stern co-directedThe Ultimate Captain America Marathon forHBO, which follows several survivors of theBoston Marathon bombings.[19] In 2018, Sundberg co-directedReversing Roe, which followsabortion laws in the United States forNetflix.[20]

In 2019, Stern co-directedThe Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park following the murder ofJennifer Levin in Central Park forAMC andSundanceTV.[21] In 2020, Stern co-directedSurviving Jeffrey Epstein forLifetime, following survivors of convicted pedophile and sex traffickerJeffrey Epstein.[22][23][24]
