Richard Warren Schickel (February 10, 1933 – February 18, 2017) was an Americanfilm historian, journalist, author, documentarian, andfilm andliterary critic. He was a film critic forTime from 1965–2010, and also wrote forLife and theLos Angeles Times Book Review. His last writings about film were forTruthdig.

He was interviewed inFor the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism (2009). In this documentary, he discusses early film criticsFrank E. Woods,Robert E. Sherwood, andOtis Ferguson, and tells of how, in the 1960s, he,Pauline Kael andAndrew Sarris, rejected moralizing opposition of the olderBosley Crowther ofThe New York Times who had railed againstviolent movies such asBonnie and Clyde (1967). In addition to film, Schickel also critiqued and documented cartoons, particularlyPeanuts.[1]

Personal life

Schickel was born inMilwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Helen (née Hendricks) and Edward John Schickel.[2][3] He received hisB.A. in political science from theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison in 1955.[4]

Schickel had two daughters. Following a series of strokes, he died in Los Angeles on February 18, 2017, eight days after his 84th birthday.[5]

Schickel received aGuggenheim Fellowship in 1964. He also lectured atYale University andUniversity of Southern California'sSchool of Film and Television.
