Rhizothera is abird genus in the familyPhasianidae, native toMalaysia andIndonesia. They are the only genus in the tribeRhizotherini.[1][2][3] Established byGeorge Robert Gray in 1841, it contains the following species:[4]
The nameRhizothera is constructed of twoGreek words:rhiza, meaning "root" andthēras, meaning "hunter".[5]
Although their taxonomic relationships were formerly a mystery, with some taxonomists placing them with the morebasal genera such asArborophila andXenoperdix that were formerly classified within the paraphyletic "Perdicinae" (this basal group is now known asRollulinae), more recent phylogenetic studies place them as the sister group to the tribePhasianini, which contains many well-known and widespread genera such asPerdix andPhasianus.[1][2]
