Norwegian actress (born 1987)
Renate Reinsve (Norwegian: [rɛˈnɑ̀ːtə ˈræ̀ɪnˌsveː] ; born 24 November 1987) is a Norwegian actress. She made her film debut in theJoachim Trier filmOslo, August 31st (2011). Her breakout role came in Trier's romantic dramaThe Worst Person in the World (2021), for which she won theCannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress [ 1] and was nominated for theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role .
She has since starred in theApple TV+ legal thriller seriesPresumed Innocent , theA24 satiricaldark comedy A Different Man , and the thrillerArmand (all 2024). She reunited with Trier for the filmSentimental Value (2025).
Born inSolbergelva in 1987 and educated atKunsthøgskolen i Oslo , Reinsve then joined theTrøndelag Teater .[ 2]
After being expelled from school at 16, Reinsve left Norway forScotland and stayed in a hostel inEdinburgh . Running out of money, she was given a job in the bar of the hostel by the manager as he "felt sorry for [her]".[ 3]
2011–2020: Film debut and early work[ edit ] In 2014, she received theHedda Award for her role inBesøk av gammel dame , an adaptation ofFriedrich Dürrenmatt 's playDer Besuch der alten Dame . Since 2016, she has been contracted toDet Norske Teatret .[ 2] Her films includeOslo, August 31st (2011),The Orheim Company (2012), andWelcome to Norway (2016).[ 2] On television, she has been a main character inNesten voksen [ 4] and side character inHvite gutter .[ 5]
2021–present: Breakthrough and expansion[ edit ] In 2021, Reinsve played the principal character Julie inJoachim Trier 's romantic comedy-dramaThe Worst Person in the World , which premiered at the2021 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.[ 6] [ 7] [ 8] [ 9] OnLate Night with Seth Meyers , Reinsve mentioned that she was considering quitting acting the day before she was offered the role of Julie, and had consideredcarpentry as a backup plan to acting.[ 10] Trier had written the part of Julie specifically for her.[ 11] Peter Bradshaw ofThe Guardian praised the film giving it a five star review declaring, "Renate Reinsve is the actor who takes on this role and she takes off like a rocket, deserving star status to rivalLily James orAlicia Vikander for her tremendously mature, sensitive and sympathetic performance."[ 12] For her performance she received numerous accolades including theCannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a nomination for theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role .[ 13]
Reinsve at the2024 Berlinale Reinsve acted in two films which competed at the74th Berlin International Film Festival , the first being Aaron Schimberg's psychological dramaA Different Man co-starring oppositeSebastian Stan and the second beingPiero Messina 's science-fiction romanceAnother End withGael Garcia Bernal .[ 14] [ 15] Reinsve acted in the filmArmand directed byHalfdan Ullmann Tøndel which premiered at the2024 Cannes Film Festival .[ 16] The film is described as "A story about boundaries - not mainly between the kids, but between the adults involved. Who decides where to set them? What is an assault, what is play, what is consent and what is privacy?"[ 17] For her performance she was nominated for theEuropean Film Award for Best Actress . Also in 2024 she played a lover and victim in theApple TV+ legal thriller seriesPresumed Innocent acting oppositeJake Gyllenhaal . The series was based on the1987 novel of the same name .[ 18]
Reinsve reunited with Joachim Trier for the familydramedy filmSentimental Value starring alongsideStellan Skarsgård andElle Fanning .[ 19] Filming commenced in August 2024.[ 20] The film premiered at the2025 Cannes Film Festival to positive reviews.[ 21] [ 22] David Ehlrich ofIndieWire praised her collaboration with the director writing, "Reinsve is immaculately attuned to Trier’s energy, andSentimental Value is carried by the manic frustration she brings to her part".[ 23] David Rooney ofThe Hollywood Reporter concurred writing, "It’s especially gladdening to see Reinsve working again with a director who draws out every ounce of raw feeling in her" while also praising her for her dramatic and comedic abilities.[ 24] In June 2025, it was announced Reinsve would star oppositeChiwetel Ejiofor in theA24 science-fiction filmThe Backrooms directed byKane Parsons .[ 25]
