Regional Australia is asocio-geographical definition used inAustralia to describe populatedregions outside of the majormetropolitan areas (typically thecapital city) in eachstate or territory, designed forcensusing and promotingurbanizedsettlements (known as regional centres) associated with demographically/economically significantrural regions, especially for the purpose of managingimmigration andforeign labour.
People who complete specified work, that beingplant andanimal cultivation,fishing andpearling,tree farming andfelling,mining orconstruction, in these areas can be granted extra points when applying for aresidentvisa. Working there while holding aworking holiday visa may allow the person to have their visa renewed.
According to the AustralianDepartment of Home Affairs, all of Australia outside the following areas is considered to be "rural and regional Australia":[1]
