Reginald Gerard McGrew (born December 16, 1976) is an American former professionalfootball player who was adefensive tackle in theNational Football League (NFL) for four seasons during the late 1990s and early 2000s. McGrew playedcollege football for theUniversity of Florida, and thereafter, he played professionally for theSan Francisco 49ers and theAtlanta Falcons of the NFL.
McGrew was born inMayo, Florida.[1] He attended Lafayette High School in Mayo,[2] and played high school football for the Lafayette Hornets.
McGrew accepted an athletic scholarship to attend theUniversity of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he played for coachSteve Spurrier'sFlorida Gators football team from1996 to1998.[3] The Gators coaching staff decided toredshirt him in 1995, and he subsequently became a starter on the Gators defensive line and was a member of the1996 Gators team that defeated theFlorida State Seminoles 52–20 in theSugar Bowl to win theBowl Alliance national championship. He received first-teamAll-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors following his junior season in 1998,[3] and he decided to forgo his final season of NCAA eligibility and entered theNFL draft.
After McGrew's NFL career was over, he returned to Gainesville to complete his bachelor's degree in sociology in 2010.
The San Francisco 49ers selected McGrew in first round (24th pick overall) in the1999 NFL draft.[4] He played for the 49ers for three seasons from1999 to2001.[5]
He missed his rookie season in 1999, having torn his triceps tendon.[6] However, McGrew played in twenty-four NFL games over the following three seasons.[1] McGrew played his fourth and final NFL season for the Atlanta Falcons in2002.[5]
