Rebecca Liddiard (born January 8, 1991) is a Canadian actress. She is known for her role as Constable Adelaide Stratton in the 2016 trans-Atlantic mystery seriesHoudini & Doyle and as morality officer Mary Shaw inFrankie Drake Mysteries.

Early life and education

[edit]

Liddiard was born in 1991 inLondon, Ontario. She studied theatre performance atRyerson University.[1][2] Liddiard moved to Toronto when she was 18,[1] and worked as a part-time office manager there for some time.[2]

Career

[edit]

In February 2016 Liddiard portrayed the lead character Thai in theTarragon Theatre production ofKat Sandler's playMustard.[1][3]

She appeared as the lead character Ella in the web seriesMsLabelled,[1][2][4] and had the recurring role of Hanna on theCity science-fiction drama seriesBetween.[2]

She achieved visibility after being cast in the role of Constable Adelaide Stratton[5] in the British-Canadian-American period mystery seriesHoudini & Doyle in 2016.[1][6]

In 2017, Liddiard portrayed Mary Whitney in the CBC/Netflix miniseriesAlias Grace, adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. Her performance was praised by the series’ writer and executive producerSarah Polley, who said, “She has a magic to her that I haven’t seen before… She is arrestingly smart, full of life, and brave, and you can see all of that in her eyes.”[7]

In Atwood’s novel, the character is described as being “part Indian,” indicating Indigenous ancestry.[8] The casting was noted within broader discussions of representation in Canadian film and television, reflecting a historical pattern of non-Indigenous actors portraying Indigenous characters — a practice that has become less common amid growing calls for appropriate representation.[9]

From 2017 to 2021, Liddiard played the regular role of Mary, a morality police officer in 1920s Toronto, in theCBC mystery-drama series,Frankie Drake Mysteries.[10] In 2019, she played airplane crash survivor Madelyn in the first season of the British-Canadian thriller television seriesDeparture.[11]
