Rebecca Louisa Ferguson Sundström (born 19 October 1983) is a Swedish actress. Known for her roles on film and television, she has acted in several blockbuster franchises and Hollywood films. She has received nominations for aGolden Globe Award and twoCritics' Choice Awards.

Born to a British mother and a Swedish father, Ferguson began her television acting career in 1999 with the Swedishsoap operaNya tider and made her motion picture acting debut in 2004 with the Swedish slasher filmDrowning Ghost. She came to international prominence with her portrayal ofElizabeth Woodville in the British dramaThe White Queen (2013), for which she was nominated for aGolden Globe forBest Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film.

In American cinema, Ferguson portrayedMI6 agent Ilsa Faust, oppositeTom Cruise, in three of theMission: Impossible films:Rogue Nation (2015),Fallout (2018), andDead Reckoning (2023) andLady Jessica in the science fiction filmsDune (2021) andDune: Part Two (2024). She playedJenny Lind in the musical filmThe Greatest Showman (2017), and acted in the horror filmsLife (2017) andDoctor Sleep (2019), the comedy-dramaFlorence Foster Jenkins (2016), thrillerThe Girl on the Train (2016), and the political dramaA House of Dynamite (2025).

Since 2023, she has starred in theApple TV+ science fiction seriesSilo playing an intelligent engineer in an underground community, a role for which she has received nominations for aSaturn Award and aSatellite Award.

Early life and education

Rebecca Louisa Ferguson Sundström[1][2] was born on 19 October 1983[3] inStockholm,[4] and grew up in the city’sVasastan district.[3] Her mother, Rosemary Ferguson,[4] is English,[5][6] and moved from Britain to Sweden at age 25.[5] Her mother helpedABBA translate the lyrics from their 1974 albumWaterloo into English[7] and also appeared on the sleeve of the band's1975 self-titled album.[8][better source needed] Her father, Olov Sundström, is a Swedish businessman.[4][9] Her parents never married[10] and separated when she was 3 years old.[11] Ferguson took her mother's surname as her stage name.[12] Her maternal grandmother isNorthern Irish, and her maternal grandfather is Scottish.[6]

Ferguson attended anEnglish-medium school in Sweden and was raised bilingual, speakingSwedish and English.[13] She attended theAdolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm and graduated in 1999.[14]

Ferguson was briefly signed to a modeling agency[6] in her youth after her mother decided that she should be a model,[15] but she disliked being photographed and turned down jobs.[6] The modeling agency placed Ferguson in a portfolio titled "normal people" due to her not being tall nor slim enough for modeling.[15] Her portfolio helped her get cast in her first acting job after it was found by a casting agency for a soap opera in Sweden.[15] Ferguson then started her acting career aged 15.[6] Unsure if she wanted to act, Ferguson took other casual work, including working at a nursery and at a daycare centre as a nanny,[16] in retail stores, at a Korean restaurant,[17] and as a cleaner in a hotel.[16]

Ferguson has danced from a very early age; she danced ballet,tap-dancing,jazz, street funk, andtango. She taughtArgentine tango at a dance company inLund, Sweden for a few years[18] while she continued her work on several short art film projects.[19]

Ferguson came to prominence as upper-class girl Anna Gripenhielm in the Swedish soap operaNya tider (1999–2000).[17] She went on to later play Chrissy Eriksson in the Swedish-American soapOcean Ave. (2002).[20] In 2004, she made her feature film debut inMikael Håfström's horror filmDrowning Ghost and later had a guest role inWallander (2008).[20] Swedish directorRichard Hobert spotted her at theSimrishamn town market in 2011, which led to her starring in his filmA One-way Trip to Antibes [sv],[1][21] which earned her a nomination for the Rising Star award at theStockholm International Film Festival.[1] In 2013, she co-starred in the filmUs [sv] alongsideGustaf Skarsgård.[22]

International recognition

In August 2012, it was announced Ferguson had been cast to playElizabeth Woodville in the ten-partBBC historical television dramaThe White Queen (2013),[23] based onPhilippa Gregory'sThe Cousins' War novels about the women of theWars of the Roses.[24] Ferguson's performance inThe White Queen was met with critical praise,[25] and earned her aGolden Globe Award nomination forBest Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film.[26] Her first Hollywood role was againstDwayne Johnson inHercules (2014).[27]

In 2015, Ferguson gained wider recognition for her portrayal ofMI6 agent Ilsa Faust, the female lead in the fifthMission: Impossible film,Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, for which she received critical acclaim.[28][29][30][31]Tom Cruise handpicked Ferguson to star opposite him in the film after watching her inThe White Queen[1][32][33] and noticing a resemblance between Ferguson andIngrid Bergman.[4] She reprised her role in the sixthMission: Impossible film,Mission: Impossible – Fallout, released in 2018 – her biggest commercial success, grossing over $790 million worldwide[34][35] – and reprised it again in the seventh film,Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, in 2023.[36]

In 2016, she played the dual roles of Katya and Lauren in theCold Warespionage thriller directed byShamim Sarif,Despite the Falling Snow, oppositeSam Reid andCharles Dance.[37] For her performance in the film, she won the Best Actress award at the 2016Prague Independent Film Festival.[38] Later that same year, Ferguson appeared inStephen Frears'sFlorence Foster Jenkins oppositeMeryl Streep andHugh Grant,[39] andTate Taylor's thriller book adaptationThe Girl on the Train starringEmily Blunt.[40] In 2017, Ferguson played the female lead inDaniel Espinosa's sci-fi horrorLife, oppositeJake Gyllenhaal andRyan Reynolds,[41] co-starred inTomas Alfredson's crime thrillerThe Snowman, alongsideMichael Fassbender andCharlotte Gainsbourg,[42] and starred as Swedish opera singerJenny Lind in the musical filmThe Greatest Showman, withHugh Jackman andMichelle Williams.[43]

In 2019, Ferguson had several major film roles. She co-starred inDoctor Sleep, the adaptation ofStephen King's novelof the same name;[44] played the villainMorgana inJoe Cornish's adventure filmThe Kid Who Would Be King;[45] and co-starred as Riza Stavros inF. Gary Gray's science fiction comedy filmMen in Black: International.[46] In 2021, she co-starred inLisa Joy's science fiction thrillerReminiscence.[47]

Denis Villeneuve cast her asLady Jessica in his film adaptation ofFrank Herbert's science fiction novelDune,[48] playing the role in bothDune (2021) andDune: Part Two (2024).[49]

In 2023, Ferguson starred in and executive produced theApple TV+ science fiction seriesSilo.[50]

Personal life

In 2007, Ferguson gave birth to her first child, a son, with her then-boyfriend Ludwig Hallberg,[51] apsychosynthesis therapist.[52] After her soap opera success and the birth of their son, she moved with Hallberg toSimrishamn, on the Swedish southeast coast.[53] In 2012, Ferguson and Hallberg taughttango together inÖsterlen.[53] Ferguson and Hallberg separated in April 2015.[53]

Since 2016,[54] Ferguson has been in a relationship with businessman Rory St. Clair Gainer,[4][55] with whom she has a daughter who was born in May 2018.[56] They married in December 2018.[54] They have a house inRichmond, southwest London, owing to its proximity toPinewood andShepperton studios.[55] Ferguson splits her time between London and a fishing village in Sweden, where her son lives with his father, and she mantains a close relationship with both of them.[15]

Ferguson has a preference for goingbarefoot, a habit that influenced her creative choices for the costume ofRose the Hat inDoctor Sleep.[57]
