Raymond Garfield Gettell (March 4, 1881 – October 9, 1949) was anAmerican football coach andpolitical science professor.[1] He served as the head football coach atTrinity College inHartford, Connecticut from 1908 to 1913 and atAmherst College from 1917 to 1920, compiling a careercollege football coaching record of 51–20–6; he also served as professor of political science from 1914 to 1923.[2][3] His wife, Nelene Groff Gettell (née Knapp), taught atAmherst High School from 1921 to 1923;[4][5] the 1923Yearbook was dedicated to her.[6] The Gettells moved toBerkeley, California in 1923 so that Gettell could assume the head of the political science department at theUniversity of California, which he held until his death.[7]

Raymond and Nelene Gettell were the parents of economist and college administratorRichard Glenn Gettell.[8]
