Rauza,Rouza,Roza (Urdu:روضة,Bengali:রৌজা,Hindi:रौज़ा) is aPerso-Arabic term used in Middle East andIndian subcontinent which means shrine or tomb.[1][2][3] It is also known asmazār,maqbara ordargah.[4]
The wordrauza is derived through Persian from theArabicrawdah (روضةrawḍah) meaning garden, but extended to tomb surrounded by garden as atAgra andAurangabad.[5] Abdul Hamid Lahauri, the author of theBadshahnama, the official history ofShah Jahan's reign, callsTaj Mahalrauza-i munawwara (Perso-Arabic:روضه منوارهrawdah-i munawwarah), meaning the illumined or illustrious tomb in a garden.[2]
