Randeep Guleria is an Indianpulmonologist and the currentPresident ofAIIMS Bilaspur. He also served as the director ofAIIMS New Delhi,[3][4] credited with the establishment of India's first centre for pulmonary medicines and sleep disorders at AIIMS.[5] He was honoured by theGovernment of India in 2015 withPadma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.[6]

Guleria is co-author of a bookTill We Win: India's Fight Against The COVID-19 Pandemic. Randeep Guleria is son of Padma ShriJagdev Singh Guleria, a cardiologist, and is elder brother to Padma Shri Sandeep Guleria, a surgeon.

Biography

An alumnus of the class of 1975 ofSt. Columba's School, Delhi,[7] Dr Guleria started his medical studies atIGMC, Shimla, affiliated toHimachal Pradesh University from where he receivedundergraduate degree in Medicine,[8] afterwards he attended thePost Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)Chandigarh, from where he secured his MD in general medicine and DM in pulmonary medicine.[9][10] He joined theAll India Institute of Medical Sciences and rose in ranks to become a professor and the head of the department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders.[9] He is associated with theWorld Health Organization (WHO) as a member of its Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE)[11] on immunization and influenza vaccination.[9][10] He also serves as a consultant toInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna on issues related to radiation protection.[9][10]

Guleria was the personal physician toAtal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India since 1998.[10] He is credited with efforts in establishing a centre for respiratory diseases and sleep medicine at AIIMS, which is reported to be a first in India.[5] He is a recipient ofRaj Nanda Pulmonary Disease Fellowship from Raj Nanda Trust and the Royal College of Physicians, UK[9][10] and is an elected fellow (2011) of theNational Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS).[12] He sits on the editorial boards of a number of medical journals such as theIndian Journal of Chest Diseases,Lung India,JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association andChest India.[10]

Randeep Guleria was included by theGovernment of India in the 2015Republic Day honours list for the civilian award ofPadma Shri.[6]

He has been awarded the prestigious Dr. B C Roy National Awards for the year 2014, under eminent medical person category by the Medical Council of India.[13][14][15][16]
