Rajammal Packiyanathan Devadas (7 April 1919 – 17 March 2002) was an Indiannutritionist, educationist and a former chancellor ofAvinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, popularly known asAvinashilingam Deemed University.[1] She was a member of the State Planning Commission of Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu Commission for Women and the elected vice president of theWorld Food Conference.[citation needed] The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of thePadma Shri in 1992.[2]
Rajammal Packiyanathan, born on 7 April 1919 to Muthiah Packiyanathan and Sornammal, inChengam,North Arcot District (presentTiruvannamalai district) in the south Indian state ofTamil Nadu, graduated in science fromQueen Mary's College, Chennai in 1944 after which secured a master's degree in science (1948), a master's degree in arts (1949) and a doctoral degree in philosophy (1950) fromOhio State University.[citation needed]
Rajammal published several books and articles[3] on the topics of nutrition and education[4][5] and was the author of a book onT. S. Avinashilingam Chettiar.[6] She was an honorary Colonel of theTamil Nadu andPondicherry chapters of theNational Cadet Corps and a member of the Gandhigram Institute Rural Health and Family Planning,National Literacy Mission,Sigma Xi,Sigma Delta Epsilon,Omicron Nu, andPhi Upsilon Omicron.[citation needed] She served as the president of the Nutrition Society of India from 1987 to 1991.[7]
