Raffaele Palladino (Italian pronunciation:[raffaˈɛːlepallaˈdiːno]; born 17 April 1984) is an Italian professionalfootball coach and former player who is the head coach ofSerie A clubAtalanta.[2]

Club career

Palladino started his senior career atSporting Benevento, before joining the youth ranks ofJuventus in 2002, where he achieved theTorneo di Viareggio in2003 and2004.[3] In 2004–05, he was loaned out toSerie B clubSalernitana, andLivorno for the 2005–06 season.[4] On 27 August 2005, he scored his first goal for the latter on hisSerie A debut, securing a 2–1 victory overLecce.[5]

He then returned to Juventus senior team in 2006–07, as the club were relegated to Serie B. He started and scored his first goal in a 1–1 away draw againstAlbinoLeffe on 18 November 2006. On 19 March 2007, he netted his first career hat-trick in a 5–1 victory overTriestina. He eventually won the Serie B titlethat season with his club, securing an immediate promotion to the top-tier division.[3]

On 3 July 2008, Palladino was signed byGenoa inco-ownership deal, priced €5 million (for 50% rights), joined along with defenderDomenico Criscito on loan.[6]

On 3 January 2011, Genoa's half share in Palladino was transferred toParma in a move which saw Parma's half share inAlberto Paloschi go the other way and the exchange of the full registration ofFrancesco Modesto andLuca Antonelli. Genoa also paid a sum of €5.85M cash.[7]

In June 2011, Juventus gave up the remaining 50% registration rights to Parma for free.[8] In July 2013, he extended his contract to 30 June 2016.[9]

On 10 November 2015, he was signed byCrotone.[10] He renewed his contract in July 2016.[11] On 31 January 2017, Palladino was re-signed byGenoa.[12][13] On 15 January 2018, he signed for Serie B clubSpezia.[14]

On 31 March 2019,Monza announced the signing of Palladino.[15]

International career

Palladino made his debut at the age of 23, in a 3–1 home win against theFaroe Islands on 21 November 2007. He played as one of the three strikers along withLuca Toni andVincenzo Iaquinta.[16]

Having coached Monza's youth sector since 2019,[17] Palladino was appointed head coach of theirPrimavera (under-19) team on 9 July 2021.[18] After having reached the semi-finals of the 2021–22Campionato Primavera 2 (under-19) promotion play-offs, Monza renewed Palladino's contract for a further year in July 2022.[19]

On 13 September 2022, Palladino was promoted head coach of Monza's first team following the dismissal ofGiovanni Stroppa,[17] with club CEOAdriano Galliani stating his appointment to be on a permanent basis.[20] On his debut, Palladino guided Monza to their first ever top flight win, defeatingJuventus 1–0.[21] He was nominatedSerie A Coach of the Month for April 2023.[22] After having led Monza to avoid relegation six matchdays in advance, on 2 June 2023, he renewed with Monza for a further season.[23] After finishing 12th in his second season saving the club from relegation again by a huge margin, he left Monza on 4 June 2024.[24]

Fiorentina

On 4 June 2024, Palladino was appointed head coach of Serie A sideFiorentina on a two-year contract.[25] But on 30 May 2025, despite finishingsixth inSerie A and qualifying for the nextUEFA Conference League, he decided to leave the team by mutual consent.[26]

Atalanta

On 11 November 2025, Palladino was announced as the new head coach of Serie A clubAtalanta, signing a contract until 2027.[2]

Style of play

Aright-footed player, he predominantly played as awinger, although he could also play as aforward, or as asecond striker. He has also represented theItaly national side. He was known in particular for his excellent technical ability anddribbling skills, as well as his pace and agility on the ball, which allowed him to beat opposing players and create space for himself to get into positions from which he can strike on goal.[27]
