Radhika Jones (born January 23, 1973) is an American magazine editor and the fifth editor-in-chief ofVanity Fair magazine. She succeededGraydon Carter, who retired in 2017 after 25 years in the role.[1][2]
Jones formerly served as the editorial director for the books department atThe New York Times, deputymanaging editor ofTime and the managing editor ofThe Paris Review.[3]
Jones was born inNew York to an American father, Robert L. Jones, a folk musician,[4] and an Indian mother, Marguerite Jones (who had come to Europe to study languages),[4] who met inParis, France, in 1970.[4] She grew up inCincinnati andRidgefield, Connecticut. She has a brother and a sister named Nalini, who is an author.[4][5] Jones has a BA degree fromHarvard University and aPhD in English andcomparative literature fromColumbia where she has also taught courses in writing and literature.[4]
Jones began her career inMoscow, Russia, as the arts editor of the English-languageMoscow Times. She was the managing editor ofThe Paris Review before moving toTime as culture editor in 2008. During her employment atTime she oversaw its yearly listing of the100 most influential people andPerson of the Year. In 2016, she joinedThe New York Times as theeditorial director of the books department.[4][5][6]
On 13 November 2017,Condé Nast formally announced Jones's appointment as editor-in-chief ofVanity Fair. She began working on 11 December 2017. According toThe Guardian, Jones was nominated for the position and championed byDavid Remnick, the editor ofThe New Yorker.[2][7]
Jones lives inBrooklyn with her husband and son.[4][5]
