Rachael May Taylor (born 11 July 1984) is an Australian actress and model. Her first lead role was in the Australian television seriesheadLand (2005–2006) as Sasha Forbes. She then made the transition to Hollywood, appearing in films includingMan-Thing (2005),See No Evil (2006),Transformers (2007),Bottle Shock (2008),Shutter (2008),Cedar Boys (2009),Splinterheads (2009),Red Dog (2011),The Darkest Hour (2011) andAny Questions for Ben? (2012).

She has also starred asDr. Lucy Fields onGrey's Anatomy, as one of the Angels on the short-lived rebootCharlie's Angels (both 2011), as the main character on theABC show666 Park Avenue (2012–2013), and in theNBC action/thriller seriesCrisis (2014).

She starred in theMarvel Cinematic Universe streaming superhero television seriesJessica Jones (2015–2019),Luke Cage (2016), andThe Defenders (2017) asTrish Walker.

Early life

Taylor was born on 11 July 1984 inLaunceston, Tasmania, the daughter of Christine and Nigel Taylor.[1][2] She attendedRiverside High School and Trevallyn Primary School. Taylor had wanted to be an actress since she was a child. Her childhood was filled with modelling and beauty pageants before she ventured into acting. She graduated from Riverside High School in 2000.[3]

Career

Taylor modelled for Skye-Jilly International and competed successfully in the state finals of Miss Teen Tasmania 1998. She has appeared in a number of American productions – such as television movies aboutNatalie Wood and the making ofDynasty (where she playedCatherine Oxenberg),[4] and thehorror moviesMan-Thing andSee No Evil.

Taylor played Sasha Forbes on the short-lived Australian drama seriesheadLand. On 3 April 2006, she was nominated for aLogie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent for her role onheadLand.

Her most prominent role to date was as Maggie Madsen, a signals analyst, in the 2007Transformers, where she appeared alongsideShia LaBeouf andMegan Fox. Taylor confirmed that she would not be returning for theTransformers sequel.[5] In 2008, Taylor scored a starring role in the US horror-thrillerShutter, a remake of the 2004 Thai film of thesame name oppositeJoshua Jackson.[6] Despite mixed reviews, the film was a box-office success.[7]

In 2009, she completed the Australian featureCedar Boys and starred in the comedySplinterheads. In 2010, she starred alongsideAlex Dimitriades in the Australian romantic dramaSummer Coda.[8] She has also signed to theHBO comedy seriesWashingtonienne andMelt, an Australian production. Taylor began a recurring role onGrey's Anatomy asDr. Lucy Fields, anobstetrician andmaternal-fetal fellow.[9][10][11]

In 2011, Taylor joined the cast of the short-lived remake of the television seriesCharlie's Angels.[12][13] Also in 2011, she had a major role in the filmRed Dog and starred in the Russian science-fiction thriller filmThe Darkest Hour, directed by filmmaker Chris Gorak.[14]

Taylor had a key supporting role in the 2012 Australian comedyAny Questions for Ben?, created byWorking Dog Productions.[15] Although the film performed disappointingly at the box-office and received lukewarm reviews, Taylor was praised for her role. Leigh Paatsch in theHerald-Sun wrote "Taylor exudes a warmth and assurance (in her performance). It is a shame she is missing in action for lengthy spells in the picture."[16]

From 2012 to 2013, Taylor starred in the new drama666 Park Avenue.[17] She was next cast in the 2014NBC seriesCrisis, which ran for one season.[18] In 2015, Taylor starred inJessica Jones as the titular character's best friendTrish Walker. She would go on to reprise the role in a voiceover cameo inLuke Cage in 2016, inThe Defenders in 2017, asecond season ofJessica Jones in 2018, and the series'final season in 2019.[19]

In 2014, Taylor played a supporting role in the thrillerThe Loft, a remake of the2008 original, alongside fellow AustralianIsabel Lucas.[20][21] In 2016, Taylor portrayed the character Rachel Hill in thecrimedrama filmGold.[22][23] In 2018, Taylor appeared in the Australian comedy-drama filmLadies in Black.[24]

In 2019, Taylor appeared inFinding Steve McQueen as Molly Murphy, where she starred alongsideTravis Fimmel,Forest Whitaker, andWilliam Fichtner.[25]

In March 2023, it was rumoured Taylor would be joiningPaul Thomas Anderson's next currently untitled film. This marks her first acting role in 4 years. She also returned to her Instagram after not having it updated in 4 years.[26]
