RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is avariable bitrate extension of theRealMediamultimediadigital container format developed byRealNetworks. As opposed to the more commonRealMedia container, which holdsstreaming media encoded at aconstant bitrate (CBR), RMVB is typically used for multimedia content stored locally. Files using this format have the file extension ".rmvb".
RealMedia uses compression similar toMPEG-4 Part 10 encoders[1] such asx264.
RMVB files are popular for distributing Asian content, especially Chinese television episodes and movies.[citation needed] For this reason, they have become noticeably present (though not entirely popular, partly due to their incompatibility with other media players) onfile sharing platforms such asBitTorrent,eDonkey andGnutella.[citation needed]
On theWindows platform, the proprietaryRealPlayer SP (RealPlayer 10 and later) and the open-sourcedMedia Player Classic support RMVB, using an appropriateDirectShow filter orReal Alternative. OnLinux and otherUnix-like platforms,MPlayer, xine, andTotem are able to play RMVB files using the open-source, reverse-engineered RMVB implementation inFFmpeg. The format is also supported for playback by the cross-platformVLC media player.
Thefile header for the format consists of the fourbytes ".RMF" (hex 2E 52 4D 46), the same as the standardRealMedia format.
