Rüdiger Lucassen (born 19 August 1951) is a German politician for the far-right[1]Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and, since 2017, he has been a member of theBundestag.
Lucassen was born 1951 in the West German village ofWesterholz and studied at theHelmut Schmidt University inHamburg and became a commissioned officer of theBundeswehr, the West German military force.[2]Lucassen entered thepopulist AfD in 2016 and became after the2017 German federal election member of the Bundestag.[3]Lucassen was chairman of the state association of the AfD inNorth Rhine-Westphalia from 2019 to 2022.[4]
Following theRussian invasion of Ukraine, when fellow AfD Bundestag membersSteffen Kotré andEugen Schmidt made an appearance on Russian propaganda journalistVladimir Solovyov's TV show, Lucassen denounced it as "treason against the people".[5] However, he had previously voted against arms deliveries to Ukraine.[6]
In October 2022, Lucassen called forGermany to acquire nuclear weapons, following a resolution by theYoung Alternatives.[7][8]
